
Guwahati | September 27 : All Assam Students Union (AASU) is all set to begin the 11-hour agitation against the Indo – Bangla land swap deal from Wednesday. Several groups have been agitating in different forms of agitations in the last several days now in Assam.
Expressions of resentment against the Indo- Bangladesh land swap deal gets momentum in Assam as Tarun Gogoi government draws flak from all sections of the society for alleged surrendering of Assam’s land to Bangladesh.
All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) would sit on 11 hours hunger strike on Wednesday in all the district headquarters in protest against the Indo- Bangla land swap deal.
Sankar Prasad Roy who is the president of the powerful Assam student body on Monday said that the students’ body would sit with 26 different ethnic bodies shortly to chalk out strategy for intensify the agitation against the Indo- Bangla land swap deal.
“Tarun Gogoi who is chief minister of Assam betrayed people of the state. He is a traitor, a spineless politician who has no guts to oppose diktats to New Delhi. Gogoi does not care ceding of Assam’s land to Bangladesh”, said Roy.
The Indo- Bangla land swap deal was signed on Sept 6 last at Dhaka during the Prime Minister’s visit to the neighbouring country. Under land swap deal, Assam would cede 357.5 acres of land to Bangladesh.
Immediately after the signing of the Indo – Bangla swaps deal, protest against the deal started in the state. All opposition political parties, student bodies and various socio- cultural organizations protested the signing of the land transfer protocol.
It is worth noting that Tarun Gogoi who accompanied Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the Dhaka visit did not opposed the Indo- Bangla land swaps deal. After returning to India Gogoi said that government’s effort was to solve the Indo- Bangla border dispute as New Delhi initiated move for having strong ties with Bangladesh. The chief minister also said that under the land swaps deal, Assam’s land in adverse possession of Bangladesh would be coming back to the state.
Agitation against Indo- Bangla land swaps deal has been creating mild unrest in Assam in the last several days. The ruling Congress was nervous at the growing protest against land to be ceded to Bangladesh. Congress which in last Assembly election ( held in last April, May) got 78 out of 126 seats was quick to counter oppositions’ protest against the Indo- Bangla land swaps deal. It had organized public rallies to counter criticism on government.
