ASU call for unity to demand justice in sexual harassment case

KOHIMA, JUNE 17 (MExN): The Angami Students’ Union (ASU), acting on the directive of the Angami Women’s Organization (AWO), has issued an urgent appeal to all apex bodies and sister unions across tribal lines in Kohima district to participate in a collective demonstration demanding justice in the ongoing sexual harassment court case against IDAN Officer Reny Wilfred.

In a statement here, ASU President Diezevisie Nakhro and General Secretary Rajuselie Chucha asserted that such behaviour introduces a “foreign character” into the societal fabric, directly contradicting the foundational values, moral standards, and cultural ethos of the community.

The tribal women bodies of Kohima have organised a peaceful collective demonstration on June 19, 2026, at the Old MLA Hostel Junction, Kohima, starting at 10:00 AM, in defence of justice, workplace safety and a secure future.

The ASU urged every community organisation, student union and right-thinking citizen within the district to ensure maximum participation, calling upon them to rise above tribal boundaries and send a clear, unified message that workforce safety and societal dignity are “absolute and non-negotiable.”

To honour the solemnity of the cause and showcase collective heritage, all participants have been earnestly requested to attend dressed in their respective traditional attire. The union also explicitly called upon everyone to maintain the highest standards of civic discipline, asking that all participants arrive in a good, peaceful, and resolute spirit.

“We must stand together in an orderly and dignified manner to defend the rule of law and safeguard a better future,” the statement added.
