Imphal | December 8

A chaotic scene was witnessed at Khwairamband Keithel in the heart of Imphal on Sunday as police intervened to foil protest staged by women vendors against Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB).

Women vendors staged the protest in response to a call from the Manipur People’s Against Citizenship Amendment Bill (MANPAC).

The women vendors of all-women market-sheds suspended their businesses of the day and staged sit-in-protests in front of their respective market places.

Shops and other business establishments remained closed in solidarity to women vendors protesting against CAB.

A group of women vendors attempted to carry out a protest rally while police were busy dealing with the women vendors who mobilised the shopkeepers in and around the Khwairamband Keithel to take part in the protest.

However, the police personnel took control of the situation to foil carrying out the rally.

The Manipur government has already fortified the entire state capital, particularly Khwairamband Keithel and other market places in the area, following MANPAC’s announcement of series of protest against CAB in the next three days.

While calling the people to stage anti-CAB protest on the streets across the state on December 8 and 9, MANPAC has also declared a 50-hour bandh from 1:00 am of December 9 till 3:00 am of December 11. It appealed people to take part in the protest against CAB by suspending their daily activities.
