An awareness programme on the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 was held in Zunheboto on October 1, organised by the Department of Social Welfare, Zunheboto, in collaboration with the Zunheboto District Legal Services Authority (ZDLSA) under the aegis of the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NALSA).

Speaking on the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, resource person Easter H Yeptho, Retainer Lawyer, ZDLSA, explained that the legislation was enacted to provide for the maintenance and welfare of parents and senior citizens, particularly those who are unable to maintain themselves.

She highlighted the rights and safeguards available to senior citizens under the Act and stressed the importance of ensuring dignity, care and support for elderly persons.

Yeptho noted that the Act extends to the whole of India, with the Act also providing for its application to Indian citizens residing outside India. She further explained who can seek maintenance under the Act, stating that the definition of parents includes biological, adoptive and step-parents. She added that the provisions apply to senior citizens who are unable to maintain themselves from their own earnings or property.

Yeptho also spoke about Section 144 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which provides a legal mechanism for seeking maintenance by persons who are unable to maintain themselves, including parents who are unable to support themselves.

The programme was chaired by K Nitomi Muru from the District Welfare Office, Zunheboto, while District Welfare Officer R Imtinukshi delivered the keynote address.
