The English Department of  Baptist College Kohima, including its Sechü Campus held a drama competition under the theme “Learning through Performance” on March 29 at Rivenburgs Memorial Hall, Kohima.

The event showcased the student’s understanding and interpretation of dramatic texts, as well as their creative and performance skills.

A diverse range of plays and excerpts were presented, reflecting the wide range of material covered from the 2nd, 4th and 6th semester, English Major curriculum.

The programme which was chaired by Süvilü, Assistant Professor, English department began with a prayer by Huqheli Zhimo, Asst Finance Secretary, Baptist College Fellowship from B.A 6th Semester.

Remarking on the event, the Head of Department, Dr. Tsenbeni stated that like other genres of literature, drama efficiently represents political, social and many other issues related to human experience and human nature.

Drama is best studied through performance, she said and commented how for want of time, many a time dramas prescribed in the syllabus and mostly read as texts and not performed.

She remarked that the event was an attempt to help students learn drama through performance.

The dramas performed at the event included; Christopher Marlowe’s Dr. Faustus by B.A 2nd Semester students, William Congreve’s The Way of the World by B.A 4th Semester students, Eugéne Ionesco’s Rhinoceros by B.A 6th semester students and Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House Sechü campus students.

B. A 6th Semester and B.A 2nd semester students bagged the first and second position respectively.

The judges included’ Assistant Professors Dr. Sentinaro, Dr. Ghunato Neho, Vesatolü, Wondanglo Tsopoe from the Department of English and Asilie Rurhia, Asst. Professor and HoD, Department of History.

Dr. Sentinaro apprised the students on the judging criteria and insightful feedback on the performances was provided by Asilie Rürhia.

The event provided a platform for students to display their skills and deepen their understanding of literary texts through performance.

The plays explored various social and cultural themes, encouraging critical thinking.
