Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Lucknow hosted its first-ever Northeast Cultural Fest on May 5.
Kohima, May 6 (MExN): Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Lucknow, hosted its first-ever Northeast Cultural Fest on May 5, celebrating the rich cultural heritage of India’s Northeastern states and reinforcing the spirit of unity in diversity.
Held under the chief patronage of Vice Chancellor Prof Raj Kumar Mittal, the festival featured a vibrant display of traditional music, art, and cultural performances, highlighting the unique identity and traditions of the Northeast.
Addressing the gathering, Prof Mittal lauded the initiative, stating that such platforms play a crucial role in strengthening cultural bonds and promoting mutual understanding among students from diverse backgrounds.
He also noted the rapid development of the Northeastern region under the Act East Policy and emphasized the importance of cultural exchange in academic institutions.
He encouraged the Northeast fraternity within the university to continue organizing such events to uphold national integration.
Dr Bonik Chandra Brahma, IFS, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Eastern Zone, Gorakhpur Region, spoke on the cultural richness of the Northeast, underscoring its diverse tribes, languages, and traditions.
He highlighted the need to embrace modern changes while preserving cultural roots.
The programme was chaired by Vivikali Hesso, a PhD scholar from the Department of History, while the convenor, Dr Somipam R Shimray, welcomed the attendees and described the festival as a meaningful initiative to promote cultural exchange and deeper understanding of Northeast India’s heritage.
The event was attended by several senior faculty members, including Prof Sunita Mishra, Prof. Victor Babu, Prof Ram Chandra, and Prof Shilpi Verma, among others.
Students from King George’s Medical College, Lucknow, also participated in the celebration.
The university currently hosts over 150 students from the Northeastern states, including 20 students from Nagaland, enrolled in various academic programmes.
