BJP rallies against inflation, shows sympathy for COTA

IMPHAL | FEBRUARY 21 : Manipur Pradesh BJP today staged a rally and submitted a memorandum to the Governor in protest against 'unnatural' and astronomical price rise in the State under the Congress led Secular Progressive Front (SPF) government.  The rally that took off from its Nityaipat Chuthek office in Imphal wound up in front of Raj Bhavan where the top BJP constituents waited for almost 20 minutes before they were granted an audience with the Governor. The memorandum submitted to the Governor requested him to instruct the government to rein in inflationary measures in order to cushion the economy of the common people.  The memorandum put forth 4-point directives for the Governor to instruct the State government with due diligence and urgency. The four points are: streamlining of public distribution system, punishment for erring public officers, punishment for illegal hoarders and black marketeers and resolution of the teachers demand under teachers body Council of Teachers Association (COTA).
The Governor has reportedly assured the BJP delegates that he will try his level best to bring to the notice of the government and in resolving the issue besetting the State.   “The people of Manipur particularly a large number of day to day earners and common people are extremely suffering due to unprecedented and unabated price rise of essential commodities,” it said, adding that “black marketers, smugglers and stock holders of essential items of daily use are playing inhuman activities in dealing with the items.”
The memorandum highlighted a contrived situation wherein despite the normal supply of petrol, “we have occasions of non-availability of diesel and kerosene.” The prices of petroleum products have increased six-fold after the two-month long economic blockade which was lifted mid last year.
Essential items like rice, onion, garlic, sugar, kerosene etc. which are supposed to be routed though the public distribution system has been channeled through the black market which could only be solved through “serious drive with honest approach”. Consumer affairs and public distribution system and the police have become mute spectator to it, it said, adding that “it may be presumed that the activities of black marketers have been done in connivance with some unscrupulous police personnel. The BJP condemned this type of criminal activity of a few police personnel”.
The BJP also pushed for an amicable resolution of the teachers’ demand of the implementation of central 6th revised pay recommendation which has not only stalled the academic pursuit of students here but also forced the students to take up the cudgel and fight for their rights.
Teachers of the State under Council of Teachers’ Association (COTA) have been demanding the implementation of 6th pay recommendation since 2009 via various forms of agitation and negotiation. Early in 2010, the government and the striking teachers reached an agreement with the government buckling under pressure and agreeing to adopt and accept the implementation of the recommendation of six pay commission.  “However, it is very unfortunate and unexpected that taking some pretext the order is not yet implemented. The adamant attitude of the government is condemned,” BJP said.
Besides the fact that more than 180 teachers, including female teachers, are now being lodged in jail for resorting to fast until death protest, students have joined the movement by surrendering their books before the Governor and the Chief Minister last month. The students have also resorted to arson even as the government failed to respond to their demand for restoring normal classes. Shanti Kumar, president of the State BJP, said after meeting the Governor that he has expressed his awareness about the hardship being faced by the people of Manipur and that he will try his level best to bring to the notice of the government and in resolving the crisis that the BJP has highlighted. Basanta Sharma, secretary BJP said that the party is totally behind the striking teachers as their demand is justified and rightful.
In the meanwhile, the striking teachers who have been mobilized under the banner of Council of Teachers’ Association (COTA) have pledged to intensify their struggle even as the government remains mute spectator to their demand for the implementation of central 6th revised pay recommendation in toto.
Beginning from Tuesday, the teachers are going into the ongoing fast until death stir in a group of 200 teachers. Earlier on the teachers sat at the fast in a group of 20 teachers so as not to disrupt the academic atmosphere of schools. But since their demand has been falling on deft ears of the government, COTA has pledged to intensify its stir with member teachers volunteering in huge numbers even at the expense of academic atmosphere, said a member today.
At least 180 teachers who were on fast until death stir have since been arrested and put behind bars on charges of attempting to commit suicide. Today alone, around 18 teachers were bundled up on a waiting police truck to be taken to the jail.
