The second day of the Summer Camp 2026, organised by Bloomfield Hill Higher Secondary School under the theme "Explosion of Mind," focused on empowering students with knowledge and life skills through a series of educational and interactive sessions.

One of the highlights of the day was an awareness session on "Substance Abuse: A Threat to Youth and Future" delivered by Dr Gihuka V. Chishi, Medical Officer, Atoizu. Addressing students from the higher classes, Dr Chishi spoke extensively on the growing challenge of substance abuse among young people and urged students to make wise choices for a healthier future.

He noted that substance abuse is no longer a distant issue but one that is increasingly affecting families and communities. "Though you may not be using substances yourself, you may have friends, relatives or neighbours who are struggling with it. We must be prepared to make the right choices and help others do the same," he said.

Explaining the concept of substance abuse, Dr Chishi described it as the excessive use of harmful substances despite knowing their negative impact on health, relationships and future prospects. He highlighted commonly abused substances such as alcohol, tobacco products, drugs and inhalants, warning students of their long-term consequences.

The medical officer identified several factors that contribute to substance abuse among youth, including peer pressure, curiosity, stress, family problems, social media influence and lack of awareness. He encouraged students to resist negative influences and educate their peers about the dangers associated with addictive substances.

"One choice can shape your future, while one wrong choice can destroy it. Choose wisely today so that you can become a better person tomorrow," Dr Chishi told the students.

During the session, he also explained how substance abuse affects vital organs such as the heart, lungs, liver and brain, weakens immunity, and can lead to addiction and social rejection. He urged students to stay away from harmful substances and become responsible members of society by promoting healthy lifestyles.
