Imphal | October 11 : Commander in chief of the Kangleipak Communist Party-Mobile Task Force (KCP-MTF) Chirom Tiken aka Prem aka Sunil Meitei was killed by a team of Imphal West police commandos in an encounter today in Imphal West district.
On October 4, arrested commander-in-chief of Kangleipak Communist Party (MTF) Sunil Meitei escaped from the custody of the Porompat Police of Imphal East district. The commander-in-chief of the KCP faction was arrested by a combined team of Delhi Police and 16 Maratha Light Infantry from Ijipura, Bangalore on June 29 and brought back to Imphal a team of Bishnupur district police on July 21.
On Tuesday, Manipur police chief Y Joykumar announced that the reward of Rs 1 akh over the head of the escaped top militant leader will be awarded to the Imphal West police commando team.
Sunil Meitei was killed in the wee hours of Tuesday inside a house at Yumnam Huidrom village under Wangoi Police Station of Imphal West district where he was taking shelter. According to the police, a 9 mm pistol loaded with six live rounds was recovered from the possession of the slain leade. Police said that house where Sunil was shot dead belongs to one Longjam Shyam, the secretary-in-charge of the group’s home department. Shyam who was also found in the house was arrested, police added.
Sunil ran out of the house when a team of police commandos cordon-off the house last night around midnight and asked all members of the house to com out for verification in a bid to escape taking advantage of the darkness. “We opened fired at him as he (Sunil) refused to stop despite repeated warning,” the officer who took part in the entire operation said. Further raid to the house, they found a hidden underground shelter of around five feet length in a room of the house which is believed to be taking shelter by the escaped militant leader.
Later, director general of police Y Joykumar, briefing reporters this afternoon at the conference room of the Imphal West police headquarter, said that since his (Sunil’s) escape on October 4 last, state intelligence and all police stations including all security establishments across the state were on the look for his whereabouts.
From the tip-off gathered by the police it has been observed that the KCP leader was sheltering in the Loktak Lake and nearby villages within the jurisdiction of Imphal West district and police commandos were tracing him based on the inputs, Y Joykumar said.
A team of police commandos led by Imphal West additional SP AK Jhaljit Singh followed the movement of his wife based on specific input that Sunil is going to meet his wife. Last night, she came on a Gypsy vehicle from his home at Wahengkhuman in Bishnupur district. But before entering the house where Sunil was taking shelter, she changed his wife's vehicle at Shamurou Bazar to proceed to the house. After confirming that she had entered the house, the police commandos cordon-off the house from all directions and ordered all members of the house to come out for verification. His wife left the place taking advantage of the chaotic situation of that moment, Joykumar added.
The DGP, while lauding the police its successful operation, announced that a cash reward of Rs one lakh will be paid to the police commando team. The dead body of Sunil having several bullets bore marks all over the body has been taken by the family after postmortem for his last rites today.
It is worth noting that after his escape from the police custody, Sunil Meitei challenged the DGP and Manipur police department through a statement dispatched to the local media houses. The statement announced that the group (KCP-MTF) will reward Rs five lakh to his cadres or any other group other than his group or individual who can attack the DGP.
He further alleged that the charges leveled against him of being a drug smuggler were nothing but a collusion of some politicians and bureaucrats to defame him and Robindro, an aspirant candidate in Bishnupur district.
The Manipur police chief refuted the allegation of Sunil today and said that state police arrested Robindro as per a arrest warrant issued by the Delhi police and state police has nothing to do with the charges leveled against Robindro and killed Sunil.
