CCTV footage leads to arrests in Dimapur abduction case

Dimapur, May 8 (MExN): Dimapur Police have solved a kidnapping and extortion case registered at East Police Station on April 21, 2026, with the arrest of both accused persons and seizure of digital evidence, including CCTV footage.

The case was registered following a complaint filed by one Ruhon Das, a resident of Sematilla, Dimapur, on April 21, 2026 at around 3:20 pm. The complainant reported that on April 20, 2026, at around 7:00 pm, while returning home after closing his shop at Hongkong Market, he was allegedly followed and wrongfully restrained by two unidentified persons near Murgipatti area.

According to the statement issued by Commissioner of Police, Dimapur, the accused persons forcibly took the victim towards the highway near the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) office, “threatened and intimidated him for money.” During the incident, the accused persons forcibly took possession of the victim’s mobile phone and compelled him to disclose his Google Pay password. Thereafter, they took him to an IOC Petrol Pump at Ghorapatti area, from where Rs 6,000 was withdrawn from his account. “Subsequently, the victim was taken towards the City Tower area and later released near Vishal Mega Mart, after which the accused persons fled from the scene,” the release stated. 

Immediately upon receipt of the complaint, police personnel from East Police Station immediately launched an investigation and visited the place of occurrence. CCTV footage collected from the petrol pump and other public places clearly captured the movements and identities of the accused persons. Based on the available evidence, photographs of the suspects were circulated among all field-level police units for identification and apprehension.

A case was registered under Sections 137(2) and 308(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.

Through continuous technical analysis, intelligence gathering, and sustained field operations, the first accused namely M Stephen Yanthan was arrested on April 28, 2026. Following further investigation and intelligence gathering, a special police team arrested the second accused, Chumbenthung Yanthan, on May 6, 2026 at East Police Station following legal procedures.

Based on the statements of the accused persons and available evidence, the police clarified that no weapon was involved in the incident, contrary to what had been reported earlier in a public media interview by the victim.

The police mentioned that, “following the incident, public concern regarding safety and law and order situation had increased after the victim's interaction with media outlets.” In this regard, Dimapur Police assured all citizens that every serious offence is dealt with promptly and professionally. “All efforts are continuously being made to ensure safety and security of the public,” the CP said.

“The successful detection of the case within a short span of time reflects the commitment and coordinated efforts of the police personnel involved in the investigation,” the CP stated while appreciating the dedicated efforts of the investigation and field teams for successfully apprehending both accused persons.
