Dimapur, September 29 (MExN): The Congress Legislature Party (CLP) today expressed deep disillusionment at the increasing number of crimes in Nagaland, reflecting the inability of the state’s government and its ‘security’ and ‘law and order’ apparatuses.
The Congress also echoed public sentiments that the state government, unable to act against crime and criminals, is now ‘passing the buck’ to the public and the common man.
“It makes no sense to send the state’s forces outside the state when our own home is under attack. Unless the government of the day immediately comes up with contingency plan to control the crimes to the satisfaction of the public, there are chances that the people may take law into their own hands in self-defense,” the Congress said.
“That, the people have lost confidence in the government of the day is evidently clear from their refusal to report the cases to the law enforcement agencies. The incidents manifest utter intelligence and policing failures,” CLP leader Tokheho Yepthomi said in a press release today.
The Congress criticized the much-hyped, but unproductive “community policing” touted previously by the Nagaland Home Minister. “Community policing as proposed by the state Home Minister was nothing but to pass on the buck to the community for his failures,” the CLP stated.
“When the police have failed to nab a single culprit, what co-operation do they expect from the victims and their families? What security could the Govt. guarantee to the victims and their families?”
The Congress also referred to the recent spate of crime, especially in Dimapur. ‘No word is sufficient’ to condemn the spate of kidnapping school children for ransom that have taken place during the past two months in Dimapur, the Congress said.
The Congress echoed public sentiments: “What is more condemnable is the failure of the law enforcement agencies to crack even one case. It has become the most dangerous threat to the life of the citizens in Dimapur affecting their daily lives. It has created fear psychosis, especially in the minds of the non-local communities who are pushed to the brink. Despite the incidents taking place one after another in quick succession, the government of the day has not taken adequate measures to control the crime. The government’s failure to contain the problem in its nascent stage has only encouraged the criminals to take the crime to menacing height.”
With 16 Reserved Police battalions at its disposal in addition to the state Police force, the Congress said, the public fails to understand why the government has been unable to control the activities of the criminals.
