CNTC demands withdrawal of Kohima DC’s notification

DIMAPUR, SEPTEMBER 5 (MExN): The Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC) has termed the notification issued by DC Kohima with regard to publication of draft updated list of non-Naga local indigenous Nepal/Gorkha residents under Kohima District with June 11, 2016 as qualifying date “another mischievous attempt by the state govt through the DC Kohima to subvert the rights our people for reasons known only to them.”

Media Cell CNTC, in a press release said the notification by the DC Kohima also violate the Nagaland Government’s standing notification No. AR-8/8/76 dated Kohima, April 28, 1978 that clearly maintained the cut-off year for the purpose of recognizing indigenous inhabitants of Nagaland as December 1, 1963.

It also mentioned that even the Nagaland Gorkha Association in its submission to Commission on RIIN on September 24, 2019 had asked for two cut-off dates (31/12/1940 and 01/12/1963). Therefore, the DC Kohima arriving at June 11, 2016 as qualifying date is simply an “atrocious decision laced with some other ulterior motives,” it stated. Deputy Commissioners of Dimapur, Chümoukedima and Niuland are also supposed to have issued similar notifications, imposing their own qualifying dates, the CNTC statement said.

In this connection, the CNTC has urged the state government to immediately direct the Deputy Commissioners to withdraw the notifications based on random qualifying dates to avoid further complications and social unrest that will follow. It also demanded implementation of RIIN with December 1, 1963 as the single cut-off date without any further delay.
