Cold wave hits part of Manipur

Cold wave in Manipur has hit hard life in the past few weeks. The chilly weather has also been caused by moderate rainfall on Friday with mercury dipping to as low as eight degree Celsius in the state capital Imphal.

 


Due to cold and medium dense fog in the state capital, vehicles were seen moving cautiously due to low visibility. A minor accident that claimed a life and injuring another was reported in morning due to low visibility.

 


As per an official report, the rainfall on Friday in the state capital was recorded at 32 mm and the rain is likely to continue till night while the temperature rose to 15 degree Celsius in the afternoon.

 


It can be noted here that mercury dipped to as low as 2.02 degrees Celsius in the last week of December in some parts of Manipur.

 


The cold wave coupled with rain had also dampened the spirit of New Year celebration on January 1. 

 


Imphal was swept by chilly wind for the past two weeks. The state capital has been experiencing the average temperature of 4 degrees Celsius since the last week of December. 

 


The average maximum temperature recorded in the last week of December was 20 degrees Celsius. It has risen to around 26 degree Celsius on January 3. However, it was suddenly dropped to the average of 15 degree Celsius on Friday. 

 


In the state the temperature has gradually gone down since December 22 (minimum 4.1 degrees Celsius), the daily weather report of Directorate of Environment (Climate Change Cell) of the state government said.

 


Severe cold wave condition also prevailed in hill districts, particularly in Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, Senapati, Tamenglong and Ukhrul for the past two weeks.

 


There were reports of snowfall in some parts of hill districts of Kangpokpi and Ukhrul.
