
Kohima, September 22 (MExN): With corruption graph fast raising and growing unpopularity of the ruling Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN), the opposition Congress has begun anti-corruption campaign against the government.
Making a scatting attack against Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio for bad governance and corruption cases tumbling out of the cupboards, Congress leaders who are on a whirlwind tour of Nagaland said corruption graph has hit the highest point and that people have failed to reap the fruits of United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the Centre. Rio is ruling the state not governing, Leader of the Opposition, Tokheho Yepthomi told the meeting of his party functionary at Wokha town today. He charged Rio’s government of anti-people, favourtism and selective government.
Accusing ruling DAN of siphoning of public funds for their personal build up, the Congress leader said MLAs were elected not to siphon off public funds or do business but to work for the welfare of the people. We are elected to serve people and work for welfare of our people he castigated the DAN.
He also claimed Rio of pumping money in few pockets and depriving large section of Naga people. He said Nagaland has ever had most corrupt government led by chief minister Neiphiu Rio thereby taking Nagas for a ride.
Another veteran Congressman and lawmaker, Joshua Sema also charged DAN of robbing the people. He highlighted some of the Centrally Sponsored Schemes which have never reached the targeted section of people but hijacked by people who are in the power today. He said schemes like SSA, RMSA, Horticulture and Bamboo mission, Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewable Mission, National Rural Health Mission, Mahathma Gandhi Rural Employment Scheme etc have not reached the targeted people adding that crores of rupees sanctioned for the people have been grossly misused and misappropriated.
Leader of the Opposition also substantiated and proved Congress points with documents distributing to the people. Yepthomi briefed his party functionaries in Zunheboto, Mokokchung, Longleng and Wokha about the Rs. 18 crore scam in Police Department and Rs. 51 lakhs in School Education department, sugar mill and transport subsidy scams, Nagaland Public Service Commission, coal scam and other irregularities and anomalies in the government departments.
He said lukewarm and irresponsive nature and attitude of the state government notwithstanding loud noises from the Congress against corruption in several departments clearly reflects how corruption has hit all time high in the state and indication of bad governance.
Confident Yepthomi having high hope of wind of change with state elections only one and half year to go vowed to fight for welfare of the people of the state stating that people have been left to their own fate under the ruling DAN. He said Congress would never betray the people but is committed to work for them.
He urged people to wake up to the call of the Congress and fight for their rights which had been denied by the DAN. He also assured of welfare state if Congress come to govern the state. His statement comes when morale of the Congress was boasted due to the spontaneous and impressive response from the people during their tour of four districts from September 20 to 22.
He also pulled up the DAN for depleted roads which has hard hit the people despite crores of rupees been pumped into the state in road sector by the union government. All these years the opposition Congress has been complaining for the bad roads.
The Congress supremo also said quality of work in the state has deteriorated due to the deduction of money by several government agencies which was compounded by certain elements which comes down to 50% left for contractors and suppliers to execute the works. He said till practice of deduction by ministers, parliamentary secretaries, government agencies and certain elements quality of works in the state would not improve. He blamed the DAN government for the entire process which has directly affected the people.
Yepthomi said even scheme like MGNREGS was grossly misused in convince with village authorities by the members of the DAN and needy people do not receive their due share.
We don’t condemn the DAN government but telling you what is happening in Nagaland, Joshua said. He had lambasted the government for bad governance and embezzlement of public funds by the people in power.
Former Member of Parliament and sitting Congress MLA, C. Apok Jamir rebutted that there was a rift in the Congress party in Nagaland. He however admitted that there were differences of opinions in the party as Congress follows democratic process unlike the Naga Peoples Front and other parties. He said differences do not mean there was rift in the party.
Yepthomi also clarified that there was no differences with President of Pradesh Congress Committee, Imtisungit Jamir. Whatever CLP leader Tokheho and PCC president Sungit speak they are the voices of the Congress Apok claimed.
He said people will give a befitting reply to the NPF in the next elections. Truth will prevail, he added. Urging people not to lose confidence on Congress or be impatient as Congress would come to power sooner or later he assured of landslide victory for the Congress in March 2013 elections due to the corruption by Rio’s government.
