"Time has come for a people’s movement to safeguard democracy,” said Congress party in Manipur on Saturday. It then hailed the Supreme Court’s verdict on a batch of pleas challenging the restrictions imposed in Jammu and Kashmir following abrogation of Article 370.

The Supreme Court in its ruling on Friday declared that "access to internet is a fundamental right and a government cannot deprive the citizens of fundamental rights except under certain conditions explicitly mentioned in the Constitution.”

The ruling came on hearing of a plea in connection with internet ban in Jammu and Kashmir since August 5, 2019 in the view of revoking of Article 370.

Addressing a press conference at Imphal Congress Bhavan, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) vice president, T Mangibabu hailed the verdict of the apex court of the country and said that it was a "verdict against suppression of people’s right by a government of the people in a democratic country.” He also said, "Now, time has come for a mass movement to safeguard democracy in India as democracy has been put at stake in this largest democratic country of the globe under the BJP-led NDA’s rule".

The MPCC leader then alleged that BJP governments at the Centre and in the states across the country have been misusing the laws of the country to demean democracy. "The saffron party is doing whatever they wanted to achieve its goal of making the country a Hindu nation. Not only using unfair means to gag those who are against the party’s policy, the BJP has been abusing powers", Mangibabu further alleged.

Regarding the current protest against Citizenship (Amendment) Act, the MPCC vice president said that the Act may not get its impact today or tomorrow but it will give detrimental effects to the future generations. "When they got the worst impact of the Act, the future generations will certainly blame today’s generation", he added.

He also alleged that the BJP-led coalition government has been suppressing people’s fundamental rights in Manipur by imposing section 144 of CrPC for more than two months in the entire Imphal West district. “This is not democracy. It is dictatorship,” he said, alleging that BJP is running governments of dictatorship both at the Centre and in the states.

The MPCC vice president then appealed the people to raise their voices against the "abuse of powers" by the BJP in the country, while asserting that the Congress party is ready to launch movements to safeguard democracy.
