Congress censure DAN govt on extension of Disturbed Area Act

Dimapur, July 8 (MExN): Following the news of the extension of Disturbed Area Act (DAA) under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), 1958 by the Union Government for another year, NPCC Media Cell has issued a press statement saying the extension proved that the GoI does not approve the NPF-led DAN Government’s often repeated claim of peace in the State. It implied that the Union Government did not trust the State Government’s reports on law and order.
According to the press statement in the past the DAA was enforced within the 20 Kms stretch along the Indo-Myanmar border. The one year extension given with effect from June 30, 2011 as appeared in one local daily has shown the entire State being brought under DAA. Therefore, the NPCC said that the people of Nagaland have the right to know as to whether the State Cabinet had recommended it and demands that the State Cabinet come out clearly with its stand. The NPF had given a knee-jerk reaction last year when the DAA was extended accusing the UPA Government when DAA was extended. “Does lack of NPF’s knee-jerk reaction this time reflect the action of DAN Cabinet?”
Meanwhile, NPCC also questioned Khekiho Zhimomi, Rajya Sabha MP for his press statement in local dailies on June 16, 2011 which accused the Nagaland Congress of going against the wishes of the people when DAA under AFSPA, 1958 was extended in 1995 when the Congress was in power. He went on to state that as an independent MLA, he had opposed the extension and withdrew his support to the government for which he paid a heavy price politically. “If he thought the declaration of DAA along the border was against the interest of the Naga people, what about declaring the entire State as DAA this time? As MP now, will he oppose the NPF’s action in the same manner? He should repeat the history as he had promised in his statement on June 16, 2011,” the NPCC Media Cell queried further.
