Consumers want check gates removed

Phek, August 8 : Calling to attention the public’s appeal to the district security authorities to withdraw check gates at various locations in Phek district, the Phek District Voluntary Consumers Organization (PDVCO) today demanded fulfilment of the demand without further delay.
Talking to The Morung Express, PDVCO president Vekhonieyi Venuh reiterated the demand and urged the Superintendent of Police (SP) to immediately withdraw the gates without further delay.
Police personnel posted at the check gates at various locations don’t ‘comply with the assignment’ but rather collect money illegally, Venuh said. These illegal practices are hampering business in many ways, he said.
He also pointed out that the act of the personnel indirectly harass and inconvenience travellers specially the Taxi passengers. It is learned from the sources that, drivers of commercial vehicles travelling between Phek and Kohima have to pay an undisclosed amount of money thrice in Phek district and once in Kohima every day.
Reiterating the organization’s stand on the gates being withdrawn, the PDVCO said Phek district should follow the example of other district such as Kohima, which is removing all check gates.
