Dimapur, September 7 (MExN): A women organization in Kohima today lamented that previously cases of rape and sexual crimes came from “Mians” (normally used to refer to Muslim immigrants) but now security personnel have joined the wagon. The Lerie Women Organization (LWO) today issued a statement today narrating lurid, if comical, account of the August 28 attempt to-rape a girl in Kohima by a man of the Central Police Reserve Force (CRPF). The LWO condemned the attempt by the CRPF ‘jawan,’ said to be at the CRPF Camp in Lerie colony in Kohima.
Narrating the incident, the organization said the CRPF ‘jawan’ entered the compound of the “intended victim” at around 1 am on August 28. He discarded his “lungi” (a wraparound worn by Indian men) but left his uniform Khaki shirt on, the organization said. The statement was appended by the LQO’s general secretary Moanungla. The CRPF man then, the LWO said, grabbed a skirt and ‘slacks’ (leggings) that were hung outside in the compound to dry and then wore them before entering the house. “The accused culprit then entered the house apparently with certain diabolic intention. Due to heavenly intervention and good fortune, the intended victim happened to be awake at that time as she was nursing an ailing child of the house, hence was alert and instantly raised an alarm for the other household members to come to her rescue,” the LWO stated.
In all his glory in skirts and slacks, the culprit was caught unawares, the LWO explained, and fled from the house but soon to be overtaken within the compound itself by members of the house. “After a short tussle during which CRPF received a few sound thrashings, he managed to escape,” the LWO said.
The next morning the victim along with neighbours, “armed with the lungi and a torchlight left behind by the culprit”, entered the CRPF Camp. “These articles were easily identified as belonging to the culprit by his fellow CRPF personnel. The said culprit was then put in the camp lock-up and the family members of the intended victim filed an FIR at the South Police Station,” the LWO explained.
The LWO vehemently denounced the attempted rape. “The heinous act may not have been actually perpetrated, not due to lack of trying but due to lack of opportunity. Nonetheless, the traumatized victim will be physically and psychologically scared for the remainder of her life,” the organization said.
The organization also expressed consternation over the fact that over the years, rape and attempted rapes have been repeated in the colony. The LWO expressed its ire – “Mian laborers were behind a number of such dastardly acts, but we era deeply saddened from the fact that the present incident is the third such attempt by various CRPF personnel from the same camp. Residents of Lerie colony should feel privileged, safe, secure and well protected from any anti-social elements by the fact that the CRPF Camp sends guard at the entrance of the colony. However, it is an irony that because of such evil ‘law enforcing’ agency, a fear psychosis has prinned the residents especially the women folk of the colony.”
“The LWO wonder if in the past instances the concerned authorities had been lax in dealing with such criminals, hence they have no fear of retribution and emboldened to assault the dignity of women time and again?,” the organization queried. They have demanded that the authorities “award the most stringent punishment to the attempted rapist.”
The LWO also demands that the CRPF camp be relocated elsewhere “as we are a peace loving colony and will not stand to be contaminated by such evil- designed people in the guise of uniform.”
