CSU cautions railway contractors over illegal waste dumping

Chümoukedima, July 24 (MExN): The Chakhroma Students’ Union (CSU) has cautioned the contractors and executing agencies involved in railway construction works within its jurisdiction, directing them to immediately stop the indiscriminate disposal of construction debris, chemical waste and hazardous materials into streams, water bodies and public areas.

In a press release, CSU President Menokhrielie Chalieu and General Secretary Rokosielie Geisuo said the union has observed with grave concern the reckless dumping practices by companies engaged in the railway project, which are not only degrading the environment but also endangering public health and contaminating vital water sources.

The union has directed all contractors to strictly comply with all environmental laws, safety protocols, and waste management directives issued by competent authorities. “Under no circumstances should construction debris, chemical waste, oil, fuel residues or any other toxic or hazardous materials be discharged into streams or disposed of indiscriminately,” the CSU stated.

The union emphasised that every contractor and executing agency is responsible for ensuring that all waste generated during construction activities is collected, transported, and disposed of only at designated and approved sites, in accordance with applicable laws and environmental standards.

While appreciating the ongoing railway infrastructure project and recognising its significance in enhancing connectivity, creating economic opportunities, and fostering long-term development for the Nagas, the CSU maintained that such development must be executed in a responsible and sustainable manner. “Development must be executed with strict adherence to environmental laws, safety standards and waste management regulations, ensuring that the environment and the interests of local communities are fully protected,” it added.

The union further cautioned that any continued violation or negligence will be viewed seriously. “Should such unlawful practices persist, CSU will be compelled to pursue the matter with the concerned government authorities and other appropriate agencies, and will extend full support for appropriate legal and administrative action against those found responsible,” the CSU added.

The CSU called upon all contractors and executing agencies to demonstrate environmental responsibility and uphold the highest standards of safety and accountability in order to protect the natural resources and ecological integrity of the Chakhroma area for present and future generations.
