Kohima, May 23 (MExN): The Chakhesang Students' Union (CSU) held its 1st Union Assembly for the tenure 2026–2028 at Phek Village on May 23 with the participation of 55 affiliated and subordinate units.
During the assembly, the CSU reaffirmed its strong opposition to the slow progress, false assurances, and incompetence of the NH-29 2-Lane Package-II (Kohima–Jessami Road) project undertaken by NHIDCL and EPC contractor M/S Ratna Infra Projects Private Limited.
As per the agreement executed between NHIDCL and M/S Ratna, the company was required to complete the project within the stipulated contract period, which expired on 6th January 2026, CSU stated.
Prior to this, the Union had consistently raised its voice on the issue and had even resorted to democratic public protests on several occasions to express its resentment over the delay.
“However, the assurances given by the company have yielded no positive outcome, and both NHIDCL and M/S Ratna have continued to ignore the demands of the Union. Furthermore, NHIDCL granted an extension to the EPC contractor till 24th September 2026 vide Ref. No. NHIDCL/PMU/Meluri/KJ-II/EOT/2025-26/Vol-IV/6165 dated 20/02/2026, despite the contractor’s repeated failure and incompetence,” the Union stated.
Further, as per the understanding and agreement reached between the CSU and NHIDCL in the presence of the District Administration, CPO, CYF, CMA, and other stakeholders during a meeting held at Pfutsero in May 2025, the project was to be completed within the stipulated timeframe. However, it is pertinent to note that the current physical progress of the project stands at only 43%, while the financial progress is at 41%, as per the report of the company on 6th May 2026.
The Union expressed its deep frustration over the continued negligence of M/S Ratna and NHIDCL, particularly in extending the contract period without taking into consideration the legitimate demands of the Union and the agreements previously made.
In this, the CSU resolved to continue its democratic movement for the timely completion of the project, ensuring quality workmanship and regular maintenance until the completion of the road.
“In this regard, the Assembly unanimously endorsed the matter to the CSU officials for further pursuance and assured its fullest support and cooperation,” the CSU stated.
The other agendas discussed and approved during the Assembly included monitoring of educational institutions under its jurisdiction, strict implementation of the Inner Line Pass (ILP) system, monitoring irregularities among government employees, exemption from taxation for local entrepreneurs and businesses; and other matters concerning public welfare.
The CSU reaffirmed its commitment to addressing issues affecting the Chakhesang people with sincerity, responsibility, and collective effort, according to CSU president Povozo Soho and general secretary Rhilo Chiero.
