DMC bans meat sales outside licensed stalls

Cautions immediate eviction for violators

Dimapur, May 8 (MExN): The Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) has directed all meat vendors and butchers operating within its jurisdiction to strictly adhere to food safety and hygiene standards, following a spate of public complaints against unhygienic handling and sale of meat products.

The order, issued by DMC Chief Executive Officer Thungchanbemo Tungoe, certain butchers and meat vendors dealing in chicken, mutton, beef, pork, fish, and other meat items within the municipal jurisdiction. 

Under the directive, all meat products must be handled, stored, displayed and sold in a clean and sanitary manner in accordance with applicable food safety and public health regulations. Vendors are further directed to ensure cleanliness of their respective stalls, equipment, surroundings and waste disposal areas at all times.

The council has further prohibited vendors from selling or displaying meat products outside their allotted market space, licensed stall or DMC-approved designated location. “Selling, displaying, or conducting business outside the allotted premises, roadside areas, footpaths, or unauthorized locations is strictly prohibited,” the order stated. 

The order stated that any vendors found violating the directives will face penal action, including immediate removal or eviction of unauthorised setups without prior notice, besides other action under relevant municipal and public health laws within the jurisdiction of DMC.

All concerned are directed to comply strictly with this order in the interest of public health and sanitation, the DMC added.
