Dimapur, October 24 (MExN): The Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) on Saturday said V Khekato Awomi, Councillor of Dimapur Municipal Council, Ward No. 6, has taken up a philanthropic initiative to clean and clear the impenetrably overgrown Old Naga Cemetery at Lake View Colony, Dimapur which had become a maintenance burden for the council.

In a press release, NCD President GK Rengma and General Secretary LK Peter Anal said the cemetery was becoming the "Sorrow of Naga Council Dimapur" due to the council's inability to keep up regular maintenance, including cleaning and removing tall grass and creepers, as its attention was concentrated on developing the New Naga Cemetery at Zani Village, Dimapur.

The council said it had spent a considerable amount last year, 2025, on spraying herbicides across the entire area, but the exercise proved futile as the cemetery was overgrown with tall grasses and creepers within a few months, and has remained a concern for the NCD since.

The officials said NCD office bearers were overwhelmed to see hundreds of people working with enthusiasm at the cemetery. The council said Awomi, after identifying the condition of the cemetery, took up the initiative to clear the thickly overgrown area.

The NCD said that in the 2000s it used to invite the Dimapur Pastor Fellowship, tribe hohos and NCD councillors for social work from time to time for the clean maintenance of the cemetery, but the practice was not followed for long. It said Awomi has committed that, if the NCD permits, he would shoulder the cleanliness maintenance of the Old Naga Cemetery as long as he is able to do so, and the council would discuss the matter officially.

Stating that the Old Naga Cemetery is everybody’s concern since dear and beloved ones are resting there, the NCD appealed to the people of Dimapur to extend their cooperation for the upkeep of the cemetery.
