Dimapur, May 31 (MExN): The Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) has reiterated that corporal punishment and mental harassment are strictly prohibited in educational institutions and cautioned that any violations will be taken seriously.
In a press release, the union stated that schools are meant to be safe spaces that promote learning, dignity and personal growth, and asserted that “any act that violates this principle will not be tolerated.”
The DNSU informed that it has taken cognisance of several cases after receiving complaints from students. It expressed concern that similar grievances continue to surface from time to time, describing the situation as a “worrying trend” that requires immediate attention and corrective measures.
The union reminded educational institutions and stakeholders that Section 17 of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009 clearly prohibits physical punishment and mental harassment of students. It noted that violations of the provision are liable for disciplinary action under applicable service rules.
The DNSU further stated that acts of cruelty, intimidation or threats against students may also attract provisions under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, as well as relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
The union also issued a strong warning against attempts to prevent students from reporting grievances.
“Any attempt to threaten, silence, or intimidate students from voicing their concerns will be treated with utmost seriousness,” the DNSU stated, adding that such actions amount to an abuse of authority and would invite “strict scrutiny and necessary action.”
Calling upon educational institutions and authorities to comply with the law, the DNSU urged them to uphold the rights and dignity of students and ensure a safe, respectful and fear-free academic environment.
The union maintained that “any violation of these legal and ethical standards will not be overlooked.”
For complaints or queries, individuals may contact the DNSU through its email or official social media platforms, the release added.
