DNSU reiterates justification for forced closure of shop

The Dimapur Naga Students Union (DNSU) reiterated its justification for the recent forced closure of a shop in Churches Colony, Dimapur. The students’ body held that the action was driven by illegal land acquisition and suspected forged indigenous inhabitant certificates, rather than a dispute over Maximum Retail Price (MRP) regulations.

The DNSU told a press conference in Dimapur, on May 12, that their action of locking down JDS Interior, an establishment owned by two non-Naga businessmen, was related to businessman Nirmal Jain, who was accused by the DNSU of fraudulently acquiring non-Naga Indigenous Inhabitant Certificate in 2002. The certificate was subsequently cancelled by the state government in April 2026
DNSU General Secretary, Michael Kath said tht the closure was the culmination of a two-year issue. According to him, the union took action after the shop owners repeatedly ignored summons to the DNSU office.

“This is not an MRP issue. It is a Non-Naga Indigenous issue,” Kath said, while adding that MRP discrepancies were discovered at the shop, but maintained they were secondary to the indigenous inhabitant certificate violations.

DNSU President Hinoto P Aomi alleged that the family, who owned JDS Interior acquired land without possessing valid indigenous status. Aomi dismissed allegations that the union’s actions were financially motivated or an attempt at extortion.

Regarding the current status of the shop, Aomi said that the DNSU handed the establishment's keys to the Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) out of respect for the apex body. Aomi challenged authorities to take legal action against the union if their intervention was deemed illegal, but demanded parallel action from the district administration and police against the accused business owners based on the information the union brought forward.

“The district administrators are aware, the police are aware, take action,” Aomi said. He justified the union’s action stating that it functions under the mandate of its tribal units and does not require permission from external entities to raise issues concerning Naga welfare.
