
Dimapur, July 5 (MExN): The Department of Land Resources (DoLR), Dimapur under the leadership of the District Project Officer, has been actively implementing the centrally sponsored Integrated Watershed Management Programme (IWMP), which has implemented under four projects with an area of 16,477 Hectares covering 47 micro-watersheds.
With an aim to reach for development of the land, the department, under IWMP has been distributing planting materials for Afforestation works and horticultural development works. Majorities of these planting materials are procured from locally owned nurseries, which also is an encouragement towards economic development of the people, stated a press note.
The note stated that in continuation with active land development and conservation programmes, the District Project Officer, along with a team of qualified staffs, visited the Project areas and instructed the beneficiaries in proper spacing and methodology to be applied while planting these saplings to allow the trees to grow properly and reach its full potentialities.
The empowerment of women is an important aspect, which is current in our state today. The DoLR, Dimapur encourages active and equal participation of women in the implementation of the IWMP projects in the district. Thus, the DPO and his staff had active interactions with the women beneficiaries of the project areas and encouraged them to participate enthusiastically for the successful implementation of the programme. The womenfolk, on their part, thanked the department for encouraging women participation and assured of their full cooperation with the department and active participation in IWMP activities, it stated.
Further, it said that during the visit to project areas, the DPO and staffs also visited areas where Soil & Moisture Conservation and Water Works are being implemented under IWMP. Within the provision of IWMP, the department has started construction of Water Harvesting Structures in the micro-watersheds and this work has been beneficial for the farmers and beneficiaries of the project. The District Project Officer and staffs have also begun the preparation of Detailed Project Reports for implementation of Integrated Watershed Management Programme (IWMP) in 24 micro-watersheds, covering an area of 8069 Hectares. For this purpose, a Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) Exercise was conducted in all the micro-watersheds and interactions were done with the beneficiaries, while in the process of conducting Baseline Survey of the selected micro-watersheds.
