IMPHAL, February 8 (NNN): Two alleged drug smugglers were apprehended with narcotics worth crore of rupees (international market value) in two separate operations, police said on Wednesday.
A SSBL gun was also recovered from one of the alleged drug peddlers.
The police said that the man with the SSBL gun was arrested by a combined team of Chandel district police and troops of 15 Assam Rifles on Tuesday. He was identified as Khailam Haokip (40) of Kangpokpi district.
The police team at Aishi village and Khongal village for poppy cultivating field survey along with the troops of 15 Assam Rifles on patrol intercepted the alleged drug smuggler, police informed. When the man was seen moving along in an area, the combined team of security force personnel stopped him on suspicion of being a poppy cultivator. On being inquired about two sacks he was carrying, he did not answer. At the same time, he introduced himself as Khailam Haokip of Ngamun village.
The security force personnel conducted checks on the two green plastic sacks and found 275 soap cases of suspected brown sugar.
The seized drug would be worth over Rs 60000000 (international market value). On further checking, one SSBL gun was also recovered from his possession, the source added.
Regarding the second case, police in Churachandpur district have also arrested one alleged drug peddler after 1306 pieces of WY tablets were recovered from his possession during an operation at Bijang village under Churachandpur district police on Tuesday, the police said today.
The police team launched the operation acting on reliable information regarding movement of a drug supplier in the village frequently.
On reaching the village, the police team intercepted the alleged drug peddler later identified as Kamkhosei Hanghal (33).
The police further conducted a search in his house where seven plastic packets containing WY tablets were detected concealed inside a plastic basket.
Upon counting, 1306 WY tablets were found in the seven packets. A cash amount of Rs 14,990 suspected to be the sale proceeds of drugs and one mobile phone were also seized during the operation, the police added.
