A combined team of police and Assam Rifles arrested an alleged drug peddler and recovered drugs (Brown Sugar and WY tablet) worth over Rs 70 lakh in the international market from the accused.
A police source said on Tuesday that the drugs were detected during a check in a Maruti car originating from border town Moreh at the permanent check post of Assam Rifles at Khudengthabi along Imphal-Moreh Road in Tengnoupal district on January 6 afternoon.
The seized drugs included 390 gm of brown sugar in 33 soap cases and 4000 pieces of WY tablet. The police estimated the value of the seized drug at around Rs 70 lakh in the international market.
The drugs were found carrying concealed in a pillow, the source said.
Imphal-Moreh section of NH-102 is known to be a major route for drug trafficking, the Manipur government had recently decided to set up an intelligence network at the Moreh border town specifically to combat the increasing menace of drug trafficking along the Indo-Myanmar border.
Despite the efforts of the state government, police and other security agencies continue to seize contraband drugs in large quantities allegedly smuggled from Myanmar side.
In it drives against the contraband drugs and smugglers, police have seized 16.809 kg of heroin powder (No.4) and 705 kg of brown sugar during the year 2019.
