Dimapur, April 9 (MExN): The Eastern Naga Students’ Federation (ENSF) on Thursday strongly condemned the alleged assault, unlawful detention and extortion of two youths belonging to the Rengma community in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district.
In a statement, the federation expressed deep concern over the incident, terming it a gross violation of fundamental human rights.
According to reported accounts, the victims were intercepted while travelling towards Imphal on the night of March 22 and in the early hours of March 23. They were allegedly taken to an undisclosed location, where they were subjected to intimidation, wrongful confinement and severe mental and physical distress.
The ENSF further alleged that the youths were coerced into surrendering a large sum of money under duress.
Describing the incident as “barbaric”, the federation said such acts of violence, intimidation and exploitation are unacceptable in any civilised society.
It called upon the concerned authorities to initiate a thorough and impartial investigation, ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice, and take stringent measures to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
The federation also expressed solidarity with the victims and their families, reiterating its commitment to safeguarding the rights and well-being of the people.
