Eye donation fortnight held

Dimapur, September 8 (MExN): The National Blindness Control Programme (NBCP) Mokokchung  organized an awareness programme on eye donation at Clark Theological College (CTC) Conference Hall on September 7, which was attended by 287 students.
A press note received here stated that the programme was held at the Clark Theological College with the aim of involving the religious institutions and religious leaders to spread the message of eye donation in the society.
The Nodal Officer of NBCP, Mokokchung, Dr Merenla (Eye Specialist) while speaking at the programme, said that one of the main causes of blindness is due to defect in the cornea which can be treated by undergoing a cornea transplant; however the cornea can be transplanted only from a donated eye. In this regard, she called upon the religious leaders to give awareness among the general public to come forward and pledge their eyes for donation after their death and make it a family tradition, it stated.
She also added that in a state like Nagaland which is a Christian majority society, Christian leaders plays a major role in changing the mindset of the people not only in the their religious way of life but also in their social life.
Later, an interactive session was also held where the students raised many question regarding eye donation, and many of them showed keen interest in pledging their eyes for donation after their death. Pamphlets regarding facts about eye donation were also distributed to the students.
