As part of a community extension initiative, students from the Department of Sociology, Fazl Ali College (FAC), Mokokchung visited Chare Government High School, Chare Town, Tuensang on April 10.
The programme featured a talk on "The Impact of Mobile Phones on Students,” delivered by Rogomen Longkumer, a 6th semester BA Sociology student at FAC.
In her presentation, Rogomen discussed both the advantages and disadvantages of mobile phone usage among students.
She highlighted that mobile phones offer instant access to information, allowing students to search for resources, read academic articles, and access learning materials anytime and anywhere. She also emphasised how platforms like YouTube and online courses can serve as valuable supplements to classroom learning.
On the downside, she pointed out that mobile phones can be a major source of distraction, leading to procrastination and reduced concentration, ultimately affecting academic performance.
Rogomen also raised concerns about the physical and mental health impacts of excessive phone use, including eye strain, poor posture, sleep disturbances, and increased stress and anxiety due to social media pressures.
She concluded by underscoring the importance of maintaining a healthy balance in mobile phone use—using them as tools for success without letting them become obstacles.
“Mobile phones are here to stay. By being mindful of how we use them, we can ensure they enhance students' academic success and overall well-being rather than hinder them.”
Following this, Nungshitemjen Longkumer, Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology, FAC, conducted a career counselling session for Class 9 and 10 students. He provided guidance on various career paths available after matriculation as well as after graduation, encouraging students to explore their interests and aspirations.
A practical session was also organised where both FAC and Chare GHS students created and presented informative charts on the impact of mobile phones, promoting interactive learning and teamwork.
Earlier in the programme, the Assistant Headmistress expressed gratitude to the visiting students and faculty, noting it was encouraging to see young students actively engaging and motivating the younger ones.
