Traffic along the Kohima-Mao section of National Highway-2 was briefly disrupted on Saturday after falling boulders and debris blocked the road at the Phesama Sinking Zone, officials said.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Protocol and Traffic) said vehicular movement was temporarily halted during the afternoon, with traffic diverted through an alternative route until the affected stretch was cleared. 

The official said the blockade has since been removed and traffic restored, while personnel continue to monitor the area in view of the unstable conditions.

 

A resident near the site expressed concern over the safety of commuters, saying rocks and debris continue to fall despite repeated clearance operations. The resident advised motorists to use alternative routes wherever possible.

On Friday, the Kohima district administration had issued a travel advisory following reports of intermittent rockfalls and falling debris from adjoining hill slopes at the Phesama Sinking Zone.

The advisory said the vulnerable stretch between Chainage Km 191+840 and Km 192+100 has become unstable due to prevailing adverse weather conditions, posing a potential risk to commuters.

The administration urged motorists to exercise maximum caution while passing through the affected area and avoid non-essential travel during heavy rainfall or adverse weather. It also discouraged night travel through the stretch and advised commuters to follow the directions of personnel deployed at the site to regulate traffic and monitor the situation.
