Farmers trained on pest management, pesticide safety in Peren district

Dimapur, March 13 (MExN): A two-day human resource development-cum-training programme for farmers was organised by the Central Integrated Pest Management Centre (CIPMC), Dimapur at Beisumpuikam village under Jalukie block in Peren district from March 12 to 13.

The programme was inaugurated by Officer-in-Charge Rameshwar Telangre, PPO (PP), in the presence of the village chairman.

In his inaugural address, Telangre highlighted the importance of capacity building and awareness among farmers on scientific pest management practices to improve crop productivity and promote sustainable agriculture.

During the training, Dr Mangesh Gajanan Sable, APPO (E), delivered a detailed session on major pests affecting vegetable crops and the methods for their effective management.

Another session was conducted by Kiachang, APPO (E), on the National Pest Surveillance System (NPSS), where he explained its role, objectives and scope in protecting plant health and strengthening pest surveillance mechanisms.

A practical hands-on session on seed treatment was conducted by Imlirenla Longkumer, APPO (WS), during which farmers were demonstrated proper techniques to protect seeds and seedlings from pests and diseases.

The programme also included a session on the safe use of pesticides, focusing on correct handling, appropriate dosage and safety measures to safeguard human health and the environment.

Farmers actively participated in the sessions and appreciated the practical knowledge shared during the programme, stating that the training would help improve their farming practices.

The village chairman also expressed gratitude to the CIPMC team for organising the programme and conveyed interest in conducting similar training initiatives in the future to promote scientific and sustainable agriculture in the region.
