Fast Track Special Court convicts two in separate POCSO cases

Dimapur, May 26 (MExN): The Fast Track Special Court (POCSO) in Dimapur has convicted two men in separate cases involving sexual assault and rape of minor girls, according to press notes issued by the Office of the Special Public Prosecutor, Dimapur. 

In one case, the court convicted Helminthang of Khaibung village under Section 4 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act read with Sections 323 and 354 of the IPC in connection with a 2020 case registered at the Women Police Station. 

The court, presided over by Special Judge Khesheli Chishi, sentenced the convict to 20 years’ imprisonment under the POCSO Act, along with three years under Section 354 IPC and one year under Section 323 IPC.

A fine of Rs 10,000 was also imposed, to be paid to the victim. The prosecution stated that the conviction was based on medical and documentary evidence, supported by witness testimonies. 

In another case, the Special POCSO Court convicted Holotoka Yepthomi for rape and repeated sexual assault of a minor girl. 

The court found the accused guilty under Section 376 IPC and Section 4 of the POCSO Act in a case registered in October 2017.

According to the prosecution, the offences took place in 2016 when the victim was 14 years old. The court sentenced the convict to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment under Section 376 IPC and another 10 years under the POCSO Act, with both sentences to run concurrently. 

The court also directed the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Dimapur, to initiate victim compensation measures for the survivor’s rehabilitation and welfare.
