Viswema, May 1 (MExN): The Feast of St Joseph the Worker was observed at St Joseph Higher Secondary School, Viswema, on Friday, highlighting the dignity of labour and the spiritual significance of work.
The celebration presented St Joseph as the patron saint of workers, craftsmen and labourers, offering a Christian context to May Day or International Workers’ Day. It honoured his life as a carpenter and foster father of Jesus, emphasising the value of human work.
Rev Fr C Joseph, counsellor of St Joseph’s College (Autonomous), Jakhama, celebrated the Eucharist for the students and encouraged devotion to St Joseph as a spiritual model for workers.
Speakers noted that Pope Pius XII had designated May 1 as the Feast of St Joseph the Worker to align with International Workers’ Day and to provide a faith-based perspective on labour.
The programme underscored that daily work, when done with dedication and love, can serve as a means of personal sanctification and participation in God’s creative work.
St Joseph, also regarded as the patron saint of workers, fathers, families and the universal Church, is often invoked by those seeking employment, speakers said.
The celebration concluded with social work and service activities involving students and staff, reflecting a collective commitment to the values of labour and service.
