Dimapur, August 20 (MExN): Shija Eye Care Foundation, a unit of Shija Hospitals and Research Institute, Langol has performed the first ever ‘Implantation of Express Glaucoma Filtration Device’ in North Eastern India and second in Eastern India including UP and Bihar.
The implantation of Express Glaucoma Filtration Device was done on an Open Angle Glaucoma patient aged about 65 years, female on August 17, 2011 at Shija Eye Care Foundation by a team of doctors led by Dr. Sachindra Laishram, MS (Ophthalmology), Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon.
A press note issued by Santosh Shekhar, Manager- Business Development stated that Express Glaucoma Filtration Device (GFD) is a mechanical device implanted to reduce the intraocular pressure, hence controlling glaucoma. It is the latest technology improving upon trabeculectomy. Trabeculectomy as such has a life span of eight to ten years. Therefore Glaucoma patient has to undergo revision surgery at regular intervals when the previous trabeculectomy has failed.
The note further mentioned that Express Glaucoma Filtration Device (GFD) increases the life span of surgery to approximately 50 years. So, most of the Glaucoma patients have to undergo only a single surgery in his or her lifetime. Express GFD surgery is less traumatic and patient friendly then trabeculectomy. It is for the convenience and comfort of the Glaucoma patients that the advanced eye care treatment is now available at the doorstep at an affordable cost.
