Phesama village council urges permanent solution

A fresh landslide was reported near Kisama along National Highway-2 on July 27. Although debris was seen along the roadside, traffic movement has not been disrupted, and vehicles continue to ply through the affected stretch.
However, motorists have been advised to exercise caution as persistent rainfall has increased the risk of further landslides, falling rocks and mudslides.
Amid the recurring incidents, Phesama Village Council chairman Tuolie Seleyi has appealed to the Nagaland Government and the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) to take urgent and permanent measures to address the landslide-prone stretch.
Speaking to the media, Seleyi said the affected area remains highly vulnerable, with landslides occurring from both the hillside above and the slope below the road, posing a constant threat to commuters.
He recalled that last year's landslides caused prolonged disruption to traffic and severely affected students travelling to educational institutions, including Japfü Christian College, St. Joseph University, St. Paul Higher Secondary School, and other schools and colleges in the area.
Seleyi noted that the alternative route developed and maintained by the government during last year's emergency helped restore connectivity for light vehicles and prevented the highway from being completely cut off.
However, he stressed that recurring landslides continue to endanger commuters and disrupt normal movement.
Urging immediate intervention, he called on the State Government and NHIDCL to prioritise permanent slope stabilisation and other engineering measures to safeguard lives and ensure uninterrupted traffic along the vital highway connecting Nagaland and Manipur.
Meanwhile, commuters have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall, drive cautiously through vulnerable stretches, and follow traffic advisories issued by the authorities.
Officials continue to monitor the situation to ensure the safety of road users.
