GDS Recruitment: Naga youth to benefit from local language policy

Dimapur, May 27 (MExN): The Department of Posts, Government of India, has formally recognised the 19 notified tribal languages and dialects of Nagaland as eligible criteria in the recruitment of Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS), marking a significant policy shift that prioritises indigenous candidates in the state.

The recognition, formalised through an Office Memorandum dated May 21, 2026, stipulates that proficiency in notified tribal local languages and dialects will be factored into GDS engagement in Nagaland, a departure from the earlier all-India open recruitment basis.

Lok Sabha MP S Supongmeren Jamir, who initiated and pursued the policy reform, said the decision would safeguard the interests and employment opportunities of the indigenous people of Nagaland by ensuring the recruitment process reflects the state’s distinct linguistic identity.

“This decision is a significant acknowledgment of the linguistic and cultural identity of the Naga people,” Jamir said, adding that it would ensure greater inclusivity, representation and participation of Nagaland’s youth in the GDS recruitment process.

The policy change was supported by the Home Department of Nagaland government, Chief Secretary of Nagaland, MLA Dr Tseilhoutuo Rhutso and Dr Alice K Vizo, Director of Postal Services, Kohima.

The MP expressed hope that the initiative would set a precedent for further efforts to protect, preserve, and promote indigenous tribal languages and cultural heritage across the state.
