'Get yourself specialized in job-oriented courses'

Kohima | September 16 : The Career Guidance Cell, Kohima College today organized a career guidance programme at its college premises.
Among the many topics covered in this programme included; “Career counseling”, “Career avenues in entrepreneurship,”  “Career scope in law” and “Career prospects in banking.”
Dwelling on the topic “Career Counseling,” Zavise Rume, officer- in- charge, vocational guidance and counseling cell, SCERT encouraged the students to prepare themselves while pursuing their career.
He said with the modern advancement in science and technology, one can earn any degree or diploma from any university or college through regular class or distance education programmes. But what skills one have acquired is more important than the degrees or diplomas.
“In view of this fact, the National Policy on Education, 1986 emphatically stressed on “de-linking degrees from jobs” except for some technical or professional jobs like medical, law, teaching and engineering, the service specialist with academic qualifications in humanities, social science and sciences,” Rume said.
He also stated that in the present world of specialization and skill based work culture, the employers are looking for people specialized or skilled in a particular field of work with a healthy attitude towards their works and a positive outlook in life.
“You need to get yourself trained or specialized in job-oriented courses. You can create your own jobs by utilizing your own talents. Let your expertise be wanted. Hard work alone is not enough. You need skills,” he said.
He also asked the students to adopt five foundations in order to excel in their life. These foundations, according to him, where one must possess to achieve their goals include; strong academic foundation, strong language foundation, strong knowledge foundation, strong personality foundation and career consciousness.
Other resource persons of the career guidance programme included; Kezhokhoto Savi, lecturer, law college/president Nagaland Voluntary Consumer Association, Neichüte Duolo, coordinator Entrepreneurs Associates and Inderjeet, manager Axis Bank.
