Guwahati | September 2 : Maoists have penetrated into Assam, according to Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi.
On Friday, Gogoi disclosed that Maoists have infiltrated into Assam and the anti-talks faction of the banned United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) was helping them in setting up bases. However, the Maoists have failed to make major headway in the state due to implementation of effective counter strategy.
“Maoists have infiltrated into the state. ULFA is helping them to grow. We are monitoring the situation closely. Some youths from the state took trainings in Maoist camps outside the state,” said Gogoi.
The chief minister said that Maoists have two over ground organizations in Assam – Assam Students Youths Organization (ASYO) and Assam Chah Janajati Suraksha Samiti (ACJSS). The president of ASYO, Aditya Bora and general secretary of ACJSS, Tingrai Orang were arrested by security forces from dense jungle of Orissa during an encounter with Maoists.
The Maoist elements were active in some pockets in the state and most prone areas identified for growth of Maoists activities were state’s tea garden areas where majority of population are Adivasis. The Adivasi population is the most deprived class in Assam.
“Our twin strategy to tackle insurgency and Maoists is in right direction. The Maoists have thus not been able to make headway,” said Gogoi. To root out insurgency, the Assam government has adopted more development works in backward areas and besides sustaining constant security offensive against militants.
The most worrying factor for the government on the ULFA-Maoist connection is that the Paresh Barua group has huge stocks of arms and these might be transferred to Maoists through different routes
On Friday evening, Adivasi militant outfit All Adivasi National Liberation Army announced unilateral ceasefire. With AANLA, all five Adivasi militant outfits have announced ceasefire.
Gogoi added that peace talks with Karbi tribal militant outfits Karbi National Liberation Front and United People Democratic Solidarity were satisfactory and the government was heading for an accord with them. The government also ‘satisfactory’ initiated peace talk with other tribal outfits such as two factions of Dima Halam Daogah and and the National Democratic Front of Boroland.
“We have made it clear to all the militant outfits that there will not be division of the state. We asked them to drop the demand of separate state,” said Gogoi. The tribal militant outfits had demanded separate state.
