Good neighborly relations focus of Assam-Nagaland border meet

Haluating (Amguri) Assam, August 20 (MExN): The much needed Border Magistrate level meeting was held today at Haluating Forest Beat Office near Amguri in Assam bordering with Tuli in Nagaland’s Mokokchung district. This was informed in a press note issued by Er. Temsu Wathi Ao District Informatics Officer (NIC) Deputy Commissioner's Office, Mokokchung & Coordinator, Border Peace Coordination Committee (Assam-Nagaland).
The meeting was attended by the Richand Ahmed, BM of Nazira and Moa Sangtam, SDO (C) cum BM of Tuli, Shri P.K. Das, SDO(C) of Nazira, Ranjan Kumar Das, DFO of Sivasagar district, Border Peace Coordination Committee (Assam-Nagaland) led by its President Shri B.P. Bora, Vice President Imsu Jamir, BPCC (A-N) Coordinator Er Temsu Wathi Ao, executives from both Assam & Nagaland sides besides officials.
The meeting was chaired by Richand Ahmed, Border Magistrate of Nazira reviewed the BM level meeting minutes held at Anakiyimsen on June 10, 2011. On inquiry by Moa Sangtam, SDO(C) & BM Tuli on the status of evicting the illegal encroachers from Assam side in the Geleki area (DAB) to his counterpart, DFO Sibsagar Ranjan Kr Das told the house that the process of survey work is going on towards the northern boundary with reference to Phisingpani of Geleki reserve forest area. But owing to inclement weather, the work is hampered. Once the area is mapped, the forest department will come out with a detail survey map where illegal land users status if any shall be officially communicated to appropriate authority for necessary eviction/action.
The DFO further said it may take some more time since the whole exercise needs cooperation from the district authorities from both Mokokchung and Longleng districts since these area shares boundaries with the above two districts. He also appeals to extend meaningful cooperation from the Naga villages situated in these areas for effective completion of the same.
SDO (C) Nazira P.K. Das highly applauded this mission of peace building and encouraged the Border Peace Coordination Committee (A-N) for their tireless selfless efforts for steering for peace with the theme “Love thy neighbour”. He advised the committee to expand the working area to the entire Assam-Nagaland border belt. He further commented that the problems of the border areas are not the same. The recent incident at Merapani, he opined that the local populace which is a mixture of many communities that may be a factor triggering lack of mutual understanding and respect with lack of humane coordination. But he was hopeful that BPCC (A-N) will strive to win the confidence of the entire belt and establish peace.
President of the BPCC (A-N) B.P. Bora emphasized the need for having frequent interaction amongst the people living in the border areas of both states in the way of activities like sports, cultural programs, seminars etc. He opined that establishing of sports & cultural schools one in Assam in the name of late Dr Tali Ao by Nagaland government and another in Nagaland in the name of Arjun medal awardee Bhogeswari Barua by Assam government in reciprocal process will go a long way in harmonising the people.
 The coordinator of the BPCC highlighted the present scenario of the Merapani where certain print and electronic media from Assam is misreporting and thereby fuelling to the situation. He appealed them to verify any such incidents before sending to the press. He urged upon all right thinking citizens to exercise calm and tackle the situation judiciously.
 The meeting ended with vote of thanks from Ranjan Kr Das, DFO Sivasagar who is very dynamic in initiating a proactive role for ushering and establishing peace and tranquillity in the border areas. He thinks fit that basic human facilities such as schools, hospitals, recreational centres, drinking water, roads etc be allowed to establish in the Assam-Nagaland border areas mutually identified by the people of these areas for their immediate need. If materialised, these common facilities can be run by joint committees people mutually drawn from the both side public.
 The next Border magistrate level meeting has been fixed on 26 September 2011 at Tuli. Further, a one day volley ball league match and cultural evening is planned between the people of Assam-Nagaland at Tuli in the next couple of months as a peace bonding exercise.
