
DIMAPUR, FEBRUARY 16 (MExN): Gorkhas in Asom today demanded that their demand for a state consisting of Darjeeling district and adjoining Doars area should be recognized and accepted.
“The Indian Gurkhas are unequivocally standing in support of Gorkhaland which should be recognized/accepted by the authority and attempts to suppress and derail the movement” would only negate the Indian constitution, stated a Gorkha organization at Dispur Last Gate.
Gorkha Janmukti Morcha Co-ordination Committee, Asom organized a “Protest Dharna” today under the banner of “Gorkha-Jana-Mukti-Morcha” GJM, NE Coordination Committee against the “indiscriminate firing” by Bengal administration on GJM “Nari Morcha” hunger strike team at Sibsu village, in Jalpaiguri district if West Bengal. The incident which killed three persons occurred on February 8 last. They deceased were Viki Larma (16), Bimla Rai (26) and Nina Khabas, besides injuring seriously many more.
It recalled Mahatma Gandhi’s non-violence methods and said their movement was for survival an identity.
Describing the West Bengal police action as “barbaric” LN Subhha and Prof. BR Joshi, president and publicity secretary of the committee said they have been denied basic fundamental rights of the Indian constitution and accused the authorities of challenging the norms of non-violence and democracy.
The gathering was made up of supporters from all over North East India even as a memorandum was sent to the Indian Home Minister demanding a CBI inquiry into the incident. It was sent through the DC of Kamrup (Metro) district of Assam.
