MLA Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu today said that the government should not take any hasty decision on job reservation/backward quota issues “as it will only worsen the existing tension without carefully examining and analysing the issues.”
Azo made this observation at the 7th session of the 14th NLA here today during supplementary on starred question hour on “Status of Gazetted & Non Gazetted Staff in Nagaland.”
While welcoming the formation of the Commission for Job Reservation, Azo suggested some few steps to be considered before they finalised the job reservation issue.
He made suggestion to assess the total population of each tribe, to collect data on employment across all departments, categorised by tribe, to determine whether the number of employees in each tribe is proportional to their population size and to announce a solution that will be based on the latest population and employment records of the state.
Azo informed the House that the basic idea of reservation policies is to maintain or promote social justice and equality.
“It seeks to redress inequalities and disadvantages suffered by certain groups of people in a society due to historical and social conditions,” he said.
It is a systematic attempt to destroy the cycle of poverty and oppression suffered by the disadvantageous or weaker sections of the society, he said adding that the idea is also to also ensure equal representation in the governing and administration of the state by providing equal opportunities to all specially to the weakest sections.
