Dimapur, August 11 (MExN): Naga organizations in Manipur today vented anger at Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh for encouraging the Manipur ‘bandhs’ over the issue of ‘bifurcating’ Senapati district into two and reminded of the atrocities Nagas have suffered in the hands of the Manipur government. The Senapati District Women Association (SDWA) and the Naga Youth Front today took strong exception to Singh’s handling of the situation.
Manipur govt warned of retaliation
The SDWA condemned with it called the prolonged silence of O. Ibobi Singh and his Cabinet Ministers in addressing humanitarian issue along NH-39. “Stranded passengers, students, children, women are made to walk for over 40km to cover the jurisdiction of the on-going indefinite general strike imposed by SHDDC. The hidden motive of the government to freely expose law and order into the hands of the bandh supporters and mobs explains the connivance policy of the SHDDC and the government,” the association said in a statement today.
“Nagas in Manipur has not forgotten the inhuman suppressive treatment of the present state government on different occasion in demand for peaceful and honorable solution for Nagas issues in Manipur.”
The women reminded that even during peaceful demonstration or agitations in Naga areas, the O. Ibobi led communal state government can swiftly adopt ‘cabinet resolutions’ to deploy its “deadly and barbaric” Manipur Commandos and IRBs within six hours time to counter and forcefully open NH-39.
The SDWA has demanded immediate suspension of the ongoing indefinite general strike. “With series of public resentment reported for non-exemption of even emergency medical needs, student’s examinations/interviews and essential goods, the nature of the bandh has seriously affected normal lives above the limit,” the SDWA said. The Manipur government is asked to at the least “accommodate humanitarian difficulties during such agitations.”
The Naga Youth Front also expressed anger at the prejudice of the Ibobi government in handling the current on-going indefinite general strike over the demand for a separate district by the some Manipuri sections. “Any predisposition decision of the Congress led SPF O Ibobi Singh state government will be very unfortunate” the NYF cautioned in a note today.
The organization warned the Ibobi government that the prevailing issue will only ignite more antagonism issues among the different communities in Manipur. The Nagas in Manipur are the ‘historical settlers’ in the area, the organization said other communities migrated some decades ago. The present situation created by the O Ibobi government will culminate only in ethnic bloodshed and tensions, the NYF cautioned.
The present state government will be solely held responsible for any repercussion and communal confrontations, the organization said. The NYF also questioned the silence of all the Naga-elected members, Nagas apex civil bodies and political parties for their failure to effectively check encroachment of the ‘ancestral land and heritage’. Any artificial demarcation and forfeiting at the expense of Naga areas will face heavy consequence, the NYF said, and assure that the organization is well prepared to counter any force that becomes a threat and infringement to its history and property.
