Immunisation Day: Kohima reviews preparations; Mokokchung urges full participation

KOHIMA/MOKOKCHUNG, JUNE 24 (MExN): As Nagaland prepares for the National Immunisation Day (NID) and Intensified Pulse Polio Immunisation (IPPI) programme on June 28, health authorities in Kohima and Mokokchung have intensified efforts to ensure the successful implementation of the campaign and full coverage of children below five years of age.

In Kohima, the District Task Force on (NID) met under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner B Henok Buchem on June 24 to review preparedness for the district-wide immunisation exercise and discuss other key public health concerns.

The meeting deliberated on biomedical waste management, fire safety compliance in health facilities, disaster preparedness, maternal and neonatal health, and immunisation activities. 

Concerns were raised regarding biomedical waste disposal, prompting DC Buchem to direct the Chief Medical Officer and Medical Superintendent to formulate a sustainable action plan. 

He also informed the meeting that the solid waste management facility at Lerie would soon be reactivated.

The meeting further reviewed challenges related to fire safety infrastructure, disaster management preparedness, water supply, power backup and equipment in health facilities. Buchem assured that the district administration would explore possible interventions and support to address these issues.

DPO RMNCAH+N Kohima, Dr Khrielhoukho Nakhro, informed the meeting that the IPPI programme will be conducted across the district on June 28 from 7 am to 3 pm. The Deputy Commissioner directed all subdivisions and concerned departments to extend necessary support to ensure the success of the campaign.

Further, Dr Avonu of the Paediatric Unit, Naga Hospital Authority Kohima (NHAK), presented a case review on child mortality, while Dr Imna spoke on the Quality Assurance

Meanwhile, the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Mokokchung, has appealed to all parents, guardians and caregivers to ensure that every eligible child aged between 0 and 5 years receives two drops of the oral polio vaccine during the immunisation drive.

The vaccination programme will be conducted through Intensive Pulse Polio Immunisation booths established across the district. Health authorities stressed that widespread participation is essential to sustain polio-free status and protect children from the disease.
