Inaugural Longleng District Football League kicks off with call to aim higher

Longleng, June 13 (MExN): The first edition of the Longleng District Football League, organised by the Longleng District Football Association (LDFA), commenced at the Public Ground, Longleng, on Friday with Phom Sports Association President S. Yanger Angh attending the inaugural programme as the special guest.

Addressing the gathering, Angh urged young footballers to aim for state and national-level competitions, describing football as more than just a sport and a means of instilling discipline, dedication, respect and perseverance.

“Football is not just a game—it teaches discipline, dedication and respect. It embodies the spirit of never giving up, no matter the odds,” he said, adding that the sport is regarded as a gentleman’s game and appealing to spectators to encourage players throughout the tournament.

He called on participants to uphold true sportsmanship by remaining humble and showing respect towards opponents and match officials.

“Victory and defeat are part of the game, but character and discipline define a true sportsperson,” he said.

Encouraging players to view the tournament as a platform for greater opportunities, Angh said hard work and dedication could enable them to represent the district at the state and national levels and bring laurels to Longleng.

He also stressed the importance of positive support from spectators, saying encouragement from the crowd boosts player morale and promotes a healthy sporting environment.

The event witnessed the participation of local clubs and youth teams from across the district and was attended by officials from the Department of Youth Resources and Sports. The programme concluded with a pledge by players to uphold fair play and discipline both on and off the field.

In his exhortation, All Ward Union Longleng President Atok N. Phom described the inaugural league as a historic milestone for the district, saying it provided an official platform for the long-standing passion for football among the people of Longleng.

Congratulating the LDFA for the initiative, he said the tournament would lay the foundation for future generations of footballers and expressed hope that it would become a breeding ground for players capable of representing the state, the nation and even the international arena.

Referring to the LDFA motto, “Rise as One and Win as All”, he encouraged the younger generation to strive for excellence and make the district proud.

A special song was presented by Yingp Phom, while A. Angmau Phom proposed the vote of thanks.

Earlier, the welcome address was delivered by LDFA President L. Pangnaü Phom, the invocation was pronounced by Longleng Town Baptist Church Pastor Rev. H. Beaü Phom, and the programme was chaired by M. Chunyei Phom.
