Phek/Peren, October 7 (MExN): Inter-departmental tournaments were inaugurated in Phek and Peren districts on October 7, bringing together government employees from various departments for sporting activities aimed at promoting teamwork, discipline and a positive work environment.

In Phek, the district Inter-Departmental Tournament was inaugurated at the Badminton Stadium with Vice President of Chakeshang Public Organisation (CPO) Vecito Dozo as the special guest. The tournament will conclude on October 9.

Addressing the programme, Dozo said CPO’s participation reflected its solidarity with government officials.

He said the tournament would promote interaction among employees and foster a conducive work environment, while serving as a “wake-up call” to improve work culture.

He urged also participants to uphold integrity and sportsmanship, the State DIPR reported.

The tournament features penalty shootout for men and women, badminton, table tennis and carrom for men and women. Dozo formally declared the tournament open with a penalty kick.

In Peren, the 12th Peren District Inter-Departmental Tournament 2026 was inaugurated at the Indoor Badminton Stadium, Jalukie, with Deputy Chief Minister for Planning & Transformation and National Highways TR Zeliang as the special guest. The three-day tournament will conclude on October 9.

Addressing the gathering, Zeliang said sports provide government employees working an opportunity to come together as teammates and friendly competitors, while promoting discipline, patience, fair play and respect for rules.

He also emphasised that government service is a trust placed in employees by the people, stressing punctuality, accountability and the need to remain at their respective places of posting.

Highlighting efforts to improve working and living conditions through new office buildings and residential quarters, he said better facilities should be matched by sincere and committed public service.

Drawing an analogy from sports, he said, “A good player does not need the referee’s whistle to remember the rules, and a good officer does not need a warning to remember his duty,” he called upon the gathering to make Peren District a role model of honesty, responsiveness and people-friendly administration.

The tournament features badminton, futsal, carrom, arm wrestling, table tennis and chess. Zeliang formally declared the tournament open after the oath was administered by District Sports Officer Wutsutho.
