Intl borders, rough terrain, weather; Army finds NE difficult to command

Shillong | September 25 : The General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 101 Area, Lt. General V.K. Narula on Saturday termed the North East as a very difficult region surrounded by international borders coupled with various problems like difficult geographical problems including heavy rain during summer and biting cold in winter.
Addressing the one-day seminar on “Model Concepts For Improved Habitat in North East organized by Chief Engineer Shillong Zone under the aegis of Chief Engineer Eastern Command , Gen. Narula also said that North Eastern Region has been connected with main stream India only through the narrow strip of land of about 21 Kms of Siliguri.
General R.M. Mittal  said that the North Eastern Region was getting good attention due to the Centre’s Look East Policy and with the Centre sanctioning Rs.9000 crore to be used for the next five year would bring substantial infrastructure Development to the region.
He informed that about the involvement of many agencies on a particular project should be avoided and also expressed the need to have trained and skilled man power in bringing faster development. Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Engineer of Eastern Command, Major General R.M. Mittal informed that the most populous countries like India and China have tried to use the population factor to their advantage.
He  however optimistic that the region could see development taking place, as the Centre has sanctioned a substantial amount for infrastructure development. Gen Narula said the economy of the region was badly affected due to partition in 1947 for the creation of the then Pakistan.
Despite various challenges faced by the region,  Gen. Narula could still appreciate the rich cultural diversity that exists in the North East among the eight States including the flora and fauna.
Delivering a Keynote Address, Dr. Sudhir Misra of IIT Kanpur said termed the seminar as timely in the back of the recent earthquake the hit Sikkim. Dr. Misra said the problem in the North East should be tackled separately in view of its geographical diversity.
