Imphal | August 11 : Declaring that the Secular Progressive Front (SPF) government of Manipur has miserably failed to address the many issues confronting the state, including that of the demand for Sadar Hills district, Manipur unit of Janata Dal (United) has trained its gun on the Congress led coalition government in Manipur saying that its ministers should immediately resign enmasse for the interest of the state and its people.
“The ministers in the SPF government should tender their resignation if they are unable to solve the issues of the state,” said Manipur JD (U) president M Tombi Singh to the media at the party’s office in Paona Bazar today.
Observing that the ongoing demand by Sadar Hills Districthood Demand Committee (SHDDC) for a full fledged district of Sadar Hills is genuine, Singh said that the state government must declare without any further delay.
Highlighting all issues confronting the state in recent times, the party said that it has sent a written communiqué to its central leadership so that the issue may be introduced in Parliament during the ongoing monsoon session. While seeking answer from the government for the abject delay in granting the demand, he said that the issue has been needlessly dragged at the cost of the general population who have been the hardest hit following general strike imposed by SHDDC across Sadar Hills which has paralyzed the arterial National Highways 39 and 53 for over ten days now, resulting in artificial inflation in the state.
He noted that the people of Sadar Hills have risen up in unison in favor of a full fledged district after having received a series of unfulfilled assurances from the state governments for the last four decades.
Districts should be created on the basis of rise in population and the attendant needs and requirements thereto after even without the need for such demands from the people, Singh said and asked the government why it is fighting shy in granting a full fledged Sadar Hills district as demanded by the people of the area.
Saying that the state government has failed on all fronts including law and order, JD (U) said that the state government must resign on moral grounds.
The state and the Central governments know fully well that NSCN-IM collects illegal tax on highways from vehicles but remain a mute spectator on the issue, the JD president observed and said that the stoic silence on the part of the government against NSCN-IM is unfortunate given the fact that the outfit recently killed four innocent civilians by planting a powerful bomb at a crowded marketplace in Imphal.
The general secretary of the party Lien Gangte reiterated that need for the government to declare Sadar Hills as a full fledged district without any further delay.
He said that the issue of Sadar Hills has been kept in cold storage for the past four decades by successive governments and the present SPF government, in its second term, is unfortunately attempting to perpetuate the trend by not acceding to the genuine demand.
