Guwahati, October 29 (MExN): Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) General Manager Chetan Kumar Shrivastava inaugurated upgraded facilities at Kamakhya Railway Station on October 29, with improvements covering passenger amenities, platform infrastructure, road connectivity and vehicular movement.
The upgrades include improvements to the station building, platforms, reserve lounge, concourse, circulating area and approach roads, aimed at enhancing passenger comfort, accessibility and operational efficiency. Dedicated traffic lanes, a covered pick-up and drop-off portico and a double-lane exit road have been developed to facilitate smoother vehicular movement and reduce congestion during peak hours.
The reserve lounge has been upgraded with improved interiors, lighting, ventilation, air-conditioning, furniture, toilets and pantry facilities. Its seating capacity has been doubled. An integrated passenger information system, improved announcement facilities and Wi-Fi connectivity have also been provided.
Platform No. 4 has undergone extensive improvements, including upgraded flooring and coping, new colour-coated roofing sheets and wider gutters for rainwater drainage. Previously uncovered sections between the foot overbridge and platform shelters have also been covered to provide better protection from adverse weather conditions.
Passenger seating capacity has been increased from 150 to 360. Two dedicated drinking-water booths for Divyangjan passengers and five additional booths for other passengers have also been installed. Other infrastructure improvements include dedicated cable ducts and the replacement of the old, damaged water-supply pipeline with concealed piping to improve service reliability and infrastructure management.
The road connecting Kamakhya Railway Station to the Coaching Depot has also been widened into a two-lane facility following the construction of a retaining wall. According to NFR, the improved road will facilitate the movement of heavy vehicles transporting materials, machinery and spare parts, while reducing congestion and supporting more efficient depot operations.
