Karbi Anglong Naga Union condemns alleged ‘aggression and harassment’

Dimapur, March 8 (MExN): The Naga public of Karbi Anglong have vehemently condemned what they termed as the “aggression and harassment” and “forcible claiming of ownership over the land of Nagas and destroying the planted trees and other properties” by Karbis as “highly questionable, unjustifiable, and unacceptable.”

Accordingly, a general meeting of the Naga public of Karbi Anglong, Assam, held under the aegis of the Assam Karbi Anglong Naga Union (KANU), has resolved to “protect the rights of the Naga people at any cost and will not allow it to take place under any circumstances.”

The meeting also resolved that the Nagas of Karbi Anglong are law-abiding citizens, respecting and honoring Article 244(A) of the Indian Constitution, which safeguards the rights of the indigenous tribal people and preserves their cultural identity.

Thus, it “unanimously resolved to defend any divisive force or laws and asserts its stand that the Naga people will not be subjugated,” stated KANU in a press release received here.

At the meeting held at the public ground in Borlengri, Assam, on March 8, the gathering also asserted that the Naga people living in Karbi Anglong, Assam, are in “no way encroachers, and the land which they hold was solely purchased land,” the release informed. Thus, based on the available documents, the term ‘encroachers,’ as alleged by Karbis, does not arise at all and is unacceptable and objectionable, they resolved.

The gathering further reaffirmed their “unflinching support and cooperation” to the leadership of KANU and expressed optimism that it would timely bring about a comprehensive resolution of the land-related issues with the Karbis at the earliest, the release added.

As per KANU, various Naga leaders, including Rising People’s Party President Joel Naga and President of the Rengma Naga Peoples Council, Kenilo Rengma, delivered solidarity messages at the meeting.

KANU President Anilo Rengma gave the presidential speech, while the union’s Spokesperson Mhao Odyuo highlighted the purpose of the meeting. The public resolutions were read out by the KANU Secretary General, KT Naga.
